China Jails Xinjiang Rights Activist For 19 Years For Subversion, Spying

Detained more than half a year, long living in Xinjiang, Henan activist Zhang Haitao, who has been accused of “incitement to subvert state power” and “providing intelligence overseas”, Chinese government have sentenced him to prison for 19 years. His wife accused the authorities of “jailed innocent people by words”, and deliberately suppressed activists located in Xinjiang. World Uyghur Congress spokesman Dilshat Rexit said that to jail innocent Han Chinese by words in Xinjiang which is a kind of threat to others, the international community should concern it.

Xinjiang activist Zhang Haitao was originally from Henan province, his wife Li Aijie was notified on Monday (18 Jan.) with the Urumqi Xinjiang intermediate people’s court, to extract the first instance verdict, the content shows that the decision as early as January 15th has been made.

Zhang Haitao was executed concurrently a 15-year prison term for “incitement to subvert state power” and five years for “providing intelligence overseas” by the Chinese government, totally 19 years, and confiscation of personal property ¥120,000.

His wife Li Aijie, who was informed on Jan. 18 of the court’s decision and had just given birth to the couple’s baby son, told RFA she was “stunned” by the sentence. Li Aijie pointed out the authorities accused that her husband post anti socialism article, helped foreign media work, provided information, and made social instability rumor.

She told the lawyer appeal for her husband.

“I am really just in a state of shock right now,” Li said. “I just went and kicked up a huge fuss at the court, calling them shameless. Even shameless people should have some limits.”

Li Aijie pointed out that all Chinese citizens included her husband has rights of freedom of expression, which should not be the reason of arrest. Chinese authority sentenced her husband heavily on purpose, and she made example of Human Rights lawyer Pu Zhiqiang who was accused of causing trouble and post online, so why her husband got quite different sentence? Li doubted that because they live in Xinjiang where is a region that Chinese authority suppress minority, so the authority heavily sentenced her husband and do not want to broadcast the freedom thoughts in Xinjiang.

Li said she had expected a sentence of perhaps 2-3 years, based on the jail terms of six years handed down to prominent rights lawyers Pu Zhiqiang and Guo Feixiong.”Now they have sentenced my husband to 19 years in prison,” she said.

“This government acts without reason. Is it just because he is in Xinjiang? Do they hand out heavier sentences in Xinjiang?”

World Uyghur Congress spokesman Dilshat Rexit consider that Uyghur in Xinjiang has been suppressed long time by the authorities, and many Uyghur of revolt was jailed and sentenced. And now, Han Chinese who lives in Xinjiang was sentenced all the same. That proved the mainland authorities not allow any freedom thoughts, But critical comments was widely broadcasted in Xinjiang. Obviously, this is a way of threat to others by the authorities.

Dilshat Rexit said that to jail innocent Han Chinese by words in Xinjiang which is a kind of threat to others, the international community should concern it.

He was captured by police in Xinjiang while on holiday in Nanyang at 2009, and he has been released two month later. After that, Zhang had frequently posted online his opinions critical of government policies and comments on current events, and gave interviews to overseas media, as well as writing articles for a human rights website. He was initially detained on June 26, 2015 on suspicion of “picking quarrels and stirring up trouble,” but the charges against him were later changed to the more serious subversion and spying charges.
